Celebrating Success 2018 at the National Maritime Museum

“Inclusion means that beautiful public spaces belong to all of us, especially to the disabled people who contribute to and are supported by Three Cs” CEO Jo Clare.

    Thursday, 28 June 2018

On the evening of June 28th 2018, and while most of the country was watching England versus Belgium in the World cup, over 350 guests of Three Cs arrived in style at the National Maritime Museum to mark the 25th anniversary of the charity with an epic party called Celebrating Success 2018. Arriving at this iconic venue in style, some in stretch limousines, people with learning disabilities, autism and/or mental health challenges put on the Ritz, glitz and glamour and, for the evening, took over the whole of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the largest museum of its kind in the world.

After Pimms on the lower deck, a welcome address by Chair Anusha Everson followed by dinner seated on the Great Map on the upper deck, guests were treated to an awards ceremony, to a performance by singer Lizzie Emeh, and dancing till late. Over 30 VIPs were recognised for making contributions to their own lives or the lives of others, for volunteering, for providing Gr8Support and for Speaking Out.

Chair, Anusha Everson, acknowledged the importance of giving something back and the huge contribution made by general volunteers, trustees and fundraisers at Three Cs. Gary Bourlet, original founder of People First and co-founder of LDE, introduced and presented awards for Independence and Community, saying how important it was that a new generation of self-advocates seized opportunities to speak out on TV and in the media in the same way that he had. Sally Warren, MD of Paradigm, introduced and presented the Gr8 Support awards to staff, emphasising the importance of the eight characteristics of great support – Adventurous, Friendly, Encouraging, Supportive of my loving, Connecting, Advocating, Respectful, Resourceful – because they are based on what 350 people with learning disabilities and their families said were most important.

Thanking SELTCP Transforming Care Forum for their efforts to transform services for people with autism, learning disabilities and mental health challenges, as well as family members who speak out at regular Speak Easy events, CEO Jo Clare said she was very proud of the achievements of the disabled people supported by Three Cs and the staff who support them. She acknowledged the support and partnership of Trustees, thanked her top team for helping lead, shape and improve an organisation we can all be proud of and thanked guests for giving generously of their applause in celebrating Three Cs success.

  • Jeev and the run up to Edinburgh

Inspired by the positive difference that Three Cs makes to people’s lives, our very own Trustee, Divyajeevan Sahoo (Jeev), is running the Edinburgh Marathon on 27th May 2018. He is hoping to raise £1000 for Three Seeds, a new employment, enterprise and empowerment project in partnership with Café van Gogh. On subjects as diverse as mind chatter, emergency services and foam rollers, Jo caught up with Jeev to find out how his training is going.

    Tuesday, 24 April 2018

Jeev has been running for nine years and  is pretty fit, having already run two half marathons  However, he is no stranger to a bit of drama in training, including a pickup and drop off by police when stranded near the M4 and, more recently, first aid and a trip home in an ambulance. If those incidents taught Jeev great respect for emergency services, three minor injuries in the run up to his first full marathon have taught Jeev to pace his progress, the enforced rests allowing him to bounce back with better form and speed. He now observes “It is not that I run to relax better but that I relax to run better”.  Keeping the mind chatter at bay has also really helped Jeev run faster and easier.

When asked what will be the first thing he does on finishing the 26.2 mile course Jeev said “The first thing is to mentally thank life, friends, Three Cs. That drives this run Jo”. Along with the pints, Jeev also plans a self-massage of leg muscles with foam roller.  He will need this to gear up to a week-long visit of Edinburgh and surrounds with family planned after the run – time to take in the famous icons and sights which, hopefully, will have flown by during the UK’s second largest marathon.

On behalf of Three Cs, Jo wishes Jeev good luck and no more brushes with emergency services in the run up to the Edinburgh marathon.  If you would like to sponsor Jeev, go to Jeev’s Justgiving page Jeev at Three Cs.
